Technique Experimentation

Hair Selection -


Today we experimented with another technique of selection using the brush tool:

                                    

We used the brush as a mask brushing over everything we wanted to be selected:

                                    

We then un-clicked the quick mask mode and inversed the selection so it selected our brush path. We then used refine edge to and adjust the settings so I would rub out everything that is white to reveal our punk girl image without a background so it is editable:

I then just added a gradient background to the image to make it look more appealing.

Final Outcome:

Typography -

Today we created a Carson effect picture, first we took a picture of a woman:

We then used the cutout filter to define main colours:

We then went to Image - Brightness/Contrast and turned the contrast right up and turned the brightness right down to give it a black and white effect:

We used the pen tool and created a work path around the face, then used the horizontal text tool and click on the work path to type within the path. I then used the text and used the warp tool to create eye out of the text:

In my final design you used the same technique as before to create the worded hair bits and deleted my quotes text that was on the eye:

Simple Animation - 

We started to make the animation by creating the background layer, first of all we used the Clouds filter giving the cloud effect:

We then used the difference cloud filter multiple times till we got the desired effect:

                                     

We then went to gradient map and changed the colours with in the picture to give a fire effect:

We then used the radial blur filter to give a burst effect to the image:

We then used the twirl filter to give a spinning effect to it:

After that we added some text applying a gradient, bevel and emboss and drop shadow to the main text (BOOM) and only adding an outerglow to the sub text (Design By Richy) and having the layer type on multiply to make it blend with the background:

We than opened the animation window and dragged the text of the screen, then duplicated the frame and dragged the text back on to the background, we then selected both frames and clicked the tween button and selected 50 frames so that the text would move from of the background to on it within 50 frames:

Astor Park Poster -

First of all I cut out the graffiti person from a picture I took at Astor Park and placed him in the corner:

I then cut out another piece of graffiti that I took a picture of and placed it behind the person, I also changed the hue/saturation to make it all purple, I then added a slight drop shadow on the person:

After that I took another picture of the Astor Park sign and cut out the background part so it was only the writing and metal texture left, I then added a gradient as an overlay on it. After took another bit of graffiti as used to put behind the Astor Park sign cut out:

I then used the rectangle tool to create a long rectangle along the middle separating the 2 halves and I then made another big rectangle at the bottom and added grey - black gradient on it:

Finally I added another graffiti picture that was taken from Astor Park and used it as an overlay on the bottom  bit, I then wrote in the text added a black outer glow and put the layer type on multiply to blend it with the background layer:

Stop Motion Animation -

First of all we took a picture of each thing we drew down, I then put each picture into after effects and arrange made each picture a frame and put it in sequence:

Creating and Using a Pattern:

First of all I took an image of a cabbage.

I then used the crop tool to select the part of the image I wanted.

I then then used the hue/saturation tool to change the colour to cyan.

I then used the text tool to put an 'f' on my pattern, I then resized using the transform tool, holding in shift to keep the same shape.

I then used the rotate tool to make the 'f' diagonal and dropped the opacity to 65% to add effect.

I then created a new file, and placed my pattern into it and duplicated my pattern.

After that I moved the patterns together and merged them, then duplicated them to created a abstract effect.

Once I had done that, I duplicated merged layer several time and put it all around to fill the Photoshop document.

I then merged the all the layers and used the text tool to create the text, after that I selected the text and and clicked the pattern layer and used the selection to cut the text out the pattern layer.

Finally I added the pattern as an overlay over the background and added a gaussian blur.

Final Image

For my second pattern, I started off using a rough texture and changing the colour balance so it became purple:

I then used the brush tool to create the fibre star in the middle, after that i then cropped the image:

I then put the pattern into another image and duplicated it, then I flipped it horizontal using the transform tool and merged the layers together:

I then duplicated the merged layer and flipped it vertical and merged the layers together:

After that I duplicated the merged layer several times and placed them together and merged it again, I then resized the merged layer to fit the Photoshop document:

I then used the motion blur filter and put it right up to 999px to create a line effect:

I then rotated the image so it was portrait and used the polar co-ordinate tool to create a burst effect and rotated the image back to landscape:

After ding my background effect, I then pen tooled out a face of a woman and used the soft brush to go around the hair and neck make  it look as though it was fading into the background layer:

I then used the pen tool to select around the hair of the woman and created a new layer and then used the soft brush tool and after selecting the colour of the brush using the eyedropper tool picking a colour from the background layer, after that I colour the hair in using the soft brush and putting the layer type on hue:

To finish my image I converted it to a smart object and used the patchwork filter to create my final image:

Research

Picture Analysis:

In this image they have used images of other planets and cropped them into the image adding lighting effects and flares changing the hue/saturation to blend them in with the image giving a bigger sense of realism. They have also used the burn tool to create the shadows within the image; they also could of used a soft brush changing the opacity to create the same effect and help it blend in with the more vibrant colours, giving it more depth. The artist has also used a lot of different textures especially within the sky as there is a sort of meteors dust effect behind the small planet and there's a swoosh cloud effect just behind the planets that has a gradient change in colour so the gradient tool could of been used. The artist has also created a little starship out of cropping out other images to create it, he has also used the brush tool to add a little glow onto the starship and added layer effects to to give it a brighter effect, emphasising it floating and moving more. I think this piece was intended for Sci-Fi fans hence the spaceship and the solar effects which would be appealing to fans of that genre. All in all I think this is a good piece of design work that shows a lot of skill within photoshop.

In this the artist has used oil pastels to give it a traditional effect. The artist has also created a shadow of the ballerina and made it slightly wavy giving the image more realism, the artist of this piece has also created little creases in her dresses by making shadows which give it a even bigger sense of realism. The artist has also used to different colours on for the wall give the image a 3D perspective and a slight lighting effect. This is a dated piece of artwork so the artist would of intended it to be for a higher class person that is into dancing.

Banksy:

Is best known for his unusual urban graffiti art, that usually represents things to do the corrupt modern day society.

This piece of art by Banksy has been made from an original photo which Banksy would have photo manipulated a bit, adding little details to give the image a bigger sense of fullness, he would have then turned up the contrast dramatically to give the black and white effect which could be printed and turned into a stencil ready to be spray painted. I believe this piece of artwork is mainly based upon the idea that being gay isn't wrong as it's been spray painted in the gay capital of the world Brighton and it's a picture of two coppers kissing which in which in societies view maybe wrong but they wouldn't be able to do anything about it because they're are coppers so he's trying to portray that being isn't wrong and that gay people are just as equal as others.

Banksy has used the same technique as in the one before to create this image as well. Banksy has used black and white for this whole picture besides the balloon to separate the two images within the picture to maybe give a bigger sense of meaning to the whole picture. From the colour of the girl and the facial expression and the way she is reaching for the bright coloured balloon, suggests to me that something has go wrong in this girls life maybe she lost someone close to her and the balloon in the picture is that person and she's trying to get them back. Another meaning within the picture could be to do with children in Africa being soldiers, carers etc. and the balloon could symbolize freedom for the child as a lot of Banksies work is to do with the government, war and problems within modern society.

David Carson:

Is a American graphic designer that is best known  for his use of typography and magazine designs.

In this picture Carson has used typography in a unique way by having the wording going horizontal and vertical. He has also used a grungy texture or a brush to make the text look as though it's dirty and broken, he's also used a brush stroke effect on the background to give it more of a grungy effect. He's also used the selection tool to separate the two parts of his name to give a scissor cut look effect. To create the black and white man Carson would make selections of the parts he wanted to be and the parts he wanted to be white, then use the brush tool to colour it giving the scarface effect.

In this piece by David Carson he used lots vector graphics along with some typography to give this almost 3D look to magazine cover. To create this he would of spent hours drawing the vector graphics and as you can see he used the original vectors and duplicated them several times slightly splitting them apart to give the 3D effect on the stars and rings etc. Which is a really unique design technique and isn't used by many designers. In this piece he has also used typography along with the split text effect again but using some of the vector graphics as the overlay to make the split. One thing about this piece I don't like is the writing above the title some of it is unreadable which may deter people, also the subtitle says 'werk' which is obviously intentional but may also deter or confuse someone viewing the magazine.

Animation Research:

Aardman animations was first founded in 1972 by Peter Lord and David Sproxton, who had a dream of creating a animation motion picture. The first animation sequence they created was Vision On it was made for deaf children and was featured on BBC, the company (Aardman) was also named after one of the super heroes from Vision On as well.

Aardman are mainly known for using a technique called stop motion clay animation where you physically manipulate an object and capture each frame at a time to make the object appear like its moving. They have used the stop motion clay animation in many of their animations like Wallace and Gromit, Chicken Run etc. Aardman have now gone into computer animation with the release of their box office hit Flushed Away.

Pythagasauras:


This is one Aardmans more recent animations. This animation is a computer made one, using programs such as Cinema 4D/3D Max for the 3D work and Adobe After Effects for the effects within the animation like the colour, text, flares and fire etc. The floating text within this animation looks as though it has been made using the plug-in text anarchy, you can get the same effect just using the text tool in after effects but the text anarchy plug-in saves a lot of time because it has pre-sets. It also looks like they've used CC Toner and used a dark greeny colour to get that colour effect. The characters in the animation would of been made using Cinema 4D for the main design of them then Body Paint to add colour and texture.

Website Pattern/Texture Research:

As this is a design website the pattern background goes hand in hand with the purpose of the website. The pattern background makes the website more appealing to the eye; no one really wants to be looking at a bland background. Although the pattern is nice I'm to keen on the red background bit at the bottom of the as you scroll down on the website, it doesn't really go with the whole colour scheme of the website. The background pattern seems to be a type of modern Indian/Rangooli digital design which is similar to a lot of the artwork they have on their website

This is also a design website based on the Top Design Magazine, On this website they haven't used patterns but they have used a plain background with a slight gradient to it. The background colour is quite bland  but they have used brighter colours on the main objects of the website with give a professional feel feel to the website, the basic design to the website also gives it a simpler user interface and makes it more user friendly so people are able to navigate it easier. They have used a texture on one of the elements on the website which is the main concept; the title, the first part to the title has a simple bevel and emboss effect with a inner shadow, they then use a texture over a little ribbon design at the end on the last word of the title, which really completes the design.
